Chatbase alternatives for a small business website

Chatbase builds AI agents that learn from your content and answer across many channels. If what you need is a chatbot on your website that asks your questions in your order and collects each lead's details, a flow chatbot such as Alma may suit you better. This page sets out what each one does, using Chatbase's own pages for every statement about Chatbase.

What Chatbase is

Chatbase describes itself as an AI agent platform for customer experience. An AI agent is a chatbot that uses an AI model to write its own replies and can carry out tasks. The headline on Chatbase's homepage is "Conversational agents for customer experience", and the page describes agents that work "across chat, email, and voice".

According to its documentation on data sources, an agent can learn from files (PDF, TXT, DOC and DOCX, up to 20 MB each), text snippets, websites, question and answer pairs, Notion pages and support tickets. Its channels page lists a chat bubble for websites, a hosted help page, iOS and Android apps, email, phone, Slack, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Zendesk, Salesforce, Shopify, WordPress and Zapier.

Agents can also take actions, which means doing something in another system during the conversation. The homepage shows examples named "Get invoices", "Get slots" and "Retrieve products", and describes a help desk "built for AI and humans working from the same conversation".

What Chatbase does well

For a business with a large library of support content and customers on several channels, those are real advantages.

When a different kind of chatbot fits better

An AI agent writes its own replies. That helps when questions vary widely, but some businesses want the opposite: the same questions asked in the same order every time, with answers they wrote themselves. A flow chatbot may suit you better if:

Where Alma fits

Alma is a chatbot builder for websites. The conversation is a flow: a set of steps you arrange, so the chatbot says what you wrote and asks what you chose, in the order you set. That makes it predictable, which suits lead capture and booking.

You start from one of 145 templates in 15 categories, edit the conversation in a drag-and-drop flow builder, and paste one embed code on your site (see the install guides). The chatbot asks questions with buttons and typed answers and tags each lead by what they said. When a visitor gives an email address or phone number, Alma saves the lead and emails it to the address you set for notifications. On the Growth plan ($79 a month) and up, Zapier can pass leads to other apps, and the Agency plan ($199 a month) adds webhooks and an API. Alma also has its own booking calendar, with a booking page you can link to from the chat or from your website.

AI answering is an optional add-on for $25 a month, with up to 500 AI answers a month. It replies to typed questions your flows do not cover, using text you provide, up to 50,000 characters (about 8,000 words). The Alma team sets it up and loads your text into the bot.

What Alma does not do

If you rely on any of these in Chatbase, Alma will not replace that part of your setup.

Questions about switching from Chatbase

Is Alma an AI agent like Chatbase?

No. Alma is a flow chatbot: it follows the conversation you build, step by step. AI answering is an optional $25 a month add-on that replies to typed questions your flows do not cover, from text you provide. It does not take actions in other software on its own.

Can Alma learn from my website or my PDFs?

No. Alma does not crawl websites or read uploaded files. With AI answering, it answers from text you give the Alma team, up to 50,000 characters, so its answers are only as complete as that text.

Can I move my Chatbase content into Alma?

There is no import from Chatbase. Text you already have, such as question and answer pairs, can be sent to the Alma team for AI answering, and your most common questions can be rebuilt as flows with buttons.

Does Alma have a free plan?

No. Alma has a 14-day free trial on the Starter plan's limits, and paid plans start at $29 a month.

Which channels does Alma answer on?

Only the chat window on your website. It works on any site where you can add a script, including WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix and Webflow.
