Botpress alternatives for a simpler website chatbot

Botpress is a platform for building AI agents, with a visual builder, knowledge bases, many messaging channels and a help desk. If you need one chatbot on your website that follows a conversation you write, a smaller tool may be easier to run. This page compares Botpress and Alma, using Botpress's own pages for every statement about Botpress.

What Botpress is

Botpress's homepage calls it "The AI-native customer support platform" and "An AI agent company that built a helpdesk". Agents are built in Botpress Studio, which it describes as a "Visual AI agent builder". When a conversation is handed to a person, the homepage says that person sees "the conversation history, account details, and any troubleshooting steps already attempted".

According to its documentation, a knowledge base (the information an agent answers from) can draw on websites, with scheduled re-crawling; documents in PDF, HTML, TXT, DOC, DOCX and Markdown, up to 50 MB each; Botpress tables; live web search; rich text written in Botpress; and sources from integrations such as Notion and Google Drive. Its integrations list includes WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Viber, Line, Discord, Twilio and Vonage, and Botpress offers Webchat for websites.

What Botpress does well

For a company with complex support needs and people who can design and maintain an agent, that range is the point.

When a simpler tool fits better

A platform that can do a great deal also asks you to make a great many decisions. A narrower tool may suit you better if:

Where Alma fits

Alma does one job: a chatbot on your website, built from a template by the person who runs the business. There is no code to write, and the conversation is the set of steps you can see on the canvas.

You start from one of 145 templates in 15 categories, edit the conversation in a drag-and-drop flow builder, and paste one embed code on your site (see the install guides). The chatbot asks questions with buttons and typed answers and tags each lead by what they said. When a visitor gives an email address or phone number, Alma saves the lead and emails it to the address you set for notifications. On the Growth plan ($79 a month) and up, Zapier can pass leads to other apps, and the Agency plan ($199 a month) adds webhooks and an API. Alma also has its own booking calendar, with a booking page you can link to from the chat or from your website.

AI answering is an optional add-on for $25 a month, with up to 500 AI answers a month. It replies to typed questions your flows do not cover, using text you provide, up to 50,000 characters (about 8,000 words). The Alma team sets it up and loads your text into the bot.

What Alma does not do

Alma is narrower than Botpress by design. It does not:

Questions about switching from Botpress

Do I need a developer to use Alma?

No. You build the conversation by dragging steps onto a canvas, usually starting from a template, and you add the chatbot to your site by pasting one embed code.

Can an Alma chatbot send information to another system?

Yes, in two ways. A flow can include an API Call step, which sends a request to a web address you choose and can save the response. On the Agency plan, webhooks and the REST API let your own software receive leads and events.

Can Alma search the web or read my documents?

No. AI answering, when you add it, answers only from text you provide, up to 50,000 characters. Alma does not search the web, crawl websites or read uploaded files.

Which channels does Alma support?

Only the chat window on your website. Alma has no WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram, Teams or Slack channel.
