Squarespace chatbot
Squarespace has a field built for this kind of code. Its Code Injection panel has a Footer field that adds code just before the closing </body> tag on every page, which is exactly where Alma's embed code belongs. Before you start, check that your Squarespace plan includes it.
Squarespace's help center says Code Injection is available on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy billing plans. Running JavaScript in a code block, the per-page option below, needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan too. If your site is on another plan, neither option is open to you until you change your Squarespace plan.
</body> tag on every page of your site.<script>
(function(w,d,s,o,f,js,fjs){
w['AlmaChat']=o;w[o]=w[o]||function(){(w[o].q=w[o].q||[]).push(arguments)};
js=d.createElement(s),fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
js.id=o;js.src=f;js.async=1;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);
}(window,document,'script','alma','https://www.helloalma.chat/widget/widget.js'));
alma('init', 'YOUR-BOT-ID');
</script>
Leave the Header field alone: code there goes into the <head> section at the top of each page instead. Squarespace's checkout pages do not support code, so the chat window covers the rest of your site but not checkout.
Start the 14-day trial, choose one of the templates, write your welcome message, and copy your embed code into Squarespace with the steps above.
The Footer field covers every page, and Alma has no setting that limits the chat to certain pages. To show it on only a few, leave the Footer field empty and add a code block to each page where you want it:
Page settings also have a Page Header Code Injection field, but it adds code to the page's <head>, at the top, so the code block is the closer match to Alma's instructions. Use one route or the other: a page with the code twice loads the chat twice.
Squarespace notes that custom code sometimes does not appear while you are logged in, even though visitors can see it, so check your site in a private or incognito browser window. A round chat button should sit in the bottom right corner, or bottom left if you chose that under Widget Position in Alma. Click it to see your welcome message.
If you used a code block and nothing appears, Squarespace names two common causes: the page sits inside an index page, or Ajax loading is turned on. On the Alma side, check that the whole embed code is in place and that your trial or plan is active. Your browser's developer tools show "Alma Chat initialized" in the Console tab when the chat loads.
Alma works alongside Squarespace rather than inside it. It does not read your pages, products or form submissions. It runs the conversations you build, collects the details visitors type in, and emails each new lead to the address you set for lead alerts. If you take appointments, it can offer open times from its own booking calendar, which syncs with Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar, so a visitor can book while they are still on your site. On the Growth plan and up, Zapier can pass leads to other apps.
If a step above no longer matches what you see, Squarespace's own pages have the current version:
Squarespace questions
Squarespace says Code Injection is available on the Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some legacy billing plans, and that JavaScript in a code block needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan. Alma's embed code needs one of those features.
The Footer field. Squarespace adds Footer code just before the closing </body> tag on every page, which is where Alma's instructions put the embed code. The Header field puts code at the top of each page instead.
Squarespace notes that custom code sometimes does not appear while you are logged in, even when visitors can see it. Open your site in a private or incognito window to check it the way a visitor would.
No. Squarespace's checkout pages do not support custom code, so the chat window appears on the rest of your site but not during checkout.
Yes. Leave the Footer field empty and add the embed code to that page with a code block set to HTML mode. Alma shows the chat window only on pages that contain the code.
Start the trial
The trial lasts 14 days with the Starter plan's limits: 1 chatbot and up to 1,000 subscribers. Build your chatbot, paste the embed code where this guide shows, and the next visitor with a question can get an answer while you are busy with something else.
